The Multi Engine Piston rating extends the privileges of a Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) or Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL) and allows you to pilot aircraft with more than one engine.
Your multi engine training will encompass learning to operate the aircraft as per your Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) or Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL), except on two engines and then learning to operate the aircraft as if an engine had failed – asymmetrically.
At PTT we use the Diamond DA42 Twin Star with a Garmin G1000 glass cockpit and Digital engine controls, a fantastic modern aircraft to train in and a pleasure to fly (even on one engine!)
The Aim of the Course
The aim of the MEP Class Rating course is to train licence holders to the level of proficiency necessary for the initial issue of a MEP class rating.
Before commencing a MEP Class Rating course, a pilot must:
- Hold a valid EASA licence (PPL or CPL) and medical
- Have completed at least 70 hours as PIC of aeroplanes
- Show evidence of a language proficiency assessment of at least ICAO Level 4 (foreign students)
Theoretical knowledge training for the MEP Class Rating comprises 7 hours of instruction in the form of long briefings as follows.
|LB-01||AIRCRAFT STRUCTURE & SYSTEMS||1:30|
|LB-02||VARIABLE PITCH PROPELLERS||1:00|
|LB-05||LOAD AND BALANCE||1:00|
The modular MEP(L) Class Rating course comprises 6 hours of dual flight instruction, including at least 3.5 hours of dual flight instruction in engine failure procedures and asymmetric flight techniques.
|FLIGHT||FLIGHT DETAIL||FLIGHT TIME *Minimum Hrs|
|MEP-1||AIRCRAFT FAMILIARISATION & GENERAL HANDLING||1:00|
|MEP-2||GENERAL HANDLING CONSOLIDATION & CIRCUITS||1:00|
|MEP-3||ASYMMETRIC PART 1||1:00||0.45|
|MEP-4||ASYMMETRIC PART 2||1:00||0.45|
|MEP-6||AYMMETRIC PERFORMANCE, CIRCUITS||1:00||1.00|
You will need to pass one written theoretical examination and undergo six hours of flight training.
On completion of your training you would need to take and pass the flight test with a CAA approved examiner of which PTT has two in-house.
The Multi-Engine Piston rating is then valid for 12 months and is renewed with a flight test with a registered examiner.
